Friar Gate Studios – Café bar
The guest speaker at the next Friar Gate Studios networking evening on 9th November is the former global head of industrial design at Bombardier Transportation – the world’s number one train manufacturer.

International Design Consultant, Luis Chomiak, will discuss his current work on major transportation projects as far afield as China, Singapore and Saudi Arabia. Drawing upon 26 years experience, Luis will talk about design, branding and design management including the need for strong interpersonal relationships to positively influence the outcome of design projects.

His talk will be of enormous value to anyone offering design services to clients – keen to gain insight into how to deal more effectively with people and internal politics to realise the potential of their designs.

Luis will talk about his support and influence in the management of Bombardier’s current international visual brand identity. Starting with a project to create a strong recognisable ‘face’ for the company’s trains, Luis and his team (which included David Gordon Ltd and Mediasphere – both based in Friar Gate studios) successfully gained buy-in globally and influenced the company’s whole corporate look and feel. The project culminated in the launch of the China Zefiro VHS (Very High Speed) Train and him and David Gordon winning Bombardier’s 2009 Innovation Prize.

Luis will describe how as a consultant to Interfleet Technology (based in Derby) he worked with Saudi Arabian Railways – not simply to design a vehicle as originally requested – but to guide the client in considering all the complex factors which influence its functionality and usage. Working at board level, Luis was able to build trust and influence, and ensure the buy-in of a broad range of people in a very diverse environment culturally, politically and professionally.

Luis Chomiak is an international design consultant and industrial design engineer with over 26 years experience working on all types of product design, rail vehicles and other forms of public and personal transportation. Amongst high profile projects, Luis has been involved in the interior and exterior design, management and customer strategy of the Singapore Metro and the Twindexx High Speed Double Decker Train, both with Bombardier.
